Gate motor battery life during power cuts

Battery backup depends on the motor, gate resistance, daily use and battery condition. Here is how to estimate demand and compare replacement options.

How much battery capacity does a cycle use?

A cycle is one opening and one closing. To estimate its charge demand, multiply average motor current in amps by total running time in seconds, then divide by 3,600. Add the controller and accessories that remain powered between movements.

The older CENTURION D5-Evo brochure lists an 8 A rated motor current and 75 mA quiescent load. Using that model as an example, assume 30 seconds of motor operation per full cycle:

Motor demand: 8 A × 30 s ÷ 3,600 = approximately 0.067 Ah per cycle.

Ten cycles: approximately 0.67 Ah.

Four hours of standby: 0.075 A × 4 h = 0.30 Ah.

Estimated total: approximately 0.97 Ah over that four-hour outage, before accessories and losses.

This is an illustrative calculation, not a measured backup result. Starting current, gate load and operating time change it. It does not apply unchanged to D5 SMART, ET or other models. A nominal 7 Ah battery does not provide all of that capacity under every load or at every age.

Why backup time gets shorter

Record whether the fault happens immediately when mains power fails, after repeated movements, or after several hours. A weak battery is one possibility; charging faults, loose connections, additional standby loads and a gate that binds also need checking.

  • Ask for a battery load test and a charging-system test together.
  • Count complete cycles during the busiest hour as well as across a day.
  • Record the duration of power cuts and the recharge time between them.
  • Have damaged, swollen or leaking batteries assessed promptly. Avoid handling exposed terminals or opening a mains-powered motor enclosure.

Replacing the battery without checking its charger can leave the original problem unresolved.

Lead-acid or lithium: compare the complete quote

Do not choose a replacement by the voltage and case size alone. The charger, controller, discharge current and battery protection must be compatible. Ask the motor manufacturer or installer to confirm the exact replacement model.

Use the installed battery replacement entry in the gate motor repair price guide. Confirm battery capacity, call-out, labour, VAT and disposal in the actual quote. A lithium option needs its own installed price and warranty; a universal five-year payback or service-life promise is not justified.

Compare total installed cost over the same period, including anticipated replacements and any charging changes. Use the supplier’s warranty and operating limits, rather than an assumed number of years, to assess the risk.

Battery capacity, charging and mechanical resistance all affect backup operation. Use the exact motor model and manufacturer-approved components; a nominal 7 Ah rating does not establish available capacity under every condition.

What to send before booking
