What per-square-metre pricing means

The measured area is one part of the quote. Surface material, access, soiling, stain treatments and drainage can change the price even for driveways of the same size.

The work duration depends on the area, surface and treatment required. Ask whether a small or awkward area is priced by the square metre, by the hour or subject to a minimum visit charge.

What a clean driveway actually comes up like

Most people haven’t seen their paving’s real colour for years. A 50 m² brick driveway that has gone dark grey under algae and tyre film comes up a warm clay red or charcoal, the shade you forget it ever had. Moss and weed growth lift out of the joints, the joints get re-sanded, and the surface dries to a uniform colour instead of patches.

A compatible sealer may help protect some surfaces after cleaning. Its performance depends on the product, preparation, exposure and maintenance. Sealing does not prevent all future staining or algae growth.

Why the film comes back if you only rinse

The dark film on paving isn’t dirt; it’s algae, and it holds moisture against the surface the way a cloth would. Rinse it off only at the surface and the film left behind keeps the paving damp through dew and drizzle, which is exactly what algae needs to spread again. That is why some driveways look grey within a season of being “cleaned”: the colour went, the algae stayed.

Cleaning removes surface growth and debris. A compatible sealer may help protect some materials, but does not prevent all algae or moss returning. Shade, moisture and maintenance still affect regrowth.

How often the paving needs it

How often paving needs washing is set by shade and damp, not by a calendar. The strip of driveway under a tree or along a damp wall goes green long before the sunlit middle does, which is why a partial re-clean sometimes makes more sense than the full job. What we see on the day sets what we recommend.

For repeat cleaning, compare the same area and treatment scope each time. Agree a schedule based on the condition of the paving rather than comparing a monthly plan price with a single-visit price.

Where we pressure wash

• Driveways and paving: concrete, brick, natural stone and tar; the most common call, and the one with the biggest visible difference.
• Pool surrounds: the paved ring around the pool, washed at lower pressure so grit doesn’t blow into the water, and the wash water routed away from the pool.
• Walls, prepping for paint: flaking paint, dust and cobwebs off garden and boundary walls before the first coat, which is the difference between paint that holds and paint that peels by next winter.
• Patios and braai areas: the paved entertainment area gets the same treatment as the driveway, and a garden cleanup can clear the beds around it on the same visit.

What pressure washing won’t fix

Better to hear it here than on the invoice. A wash is the right tool for dirt, algae, moss and tyre film, not for everything:

• Deep-set oil stains: separately quoted stain treatment lifts most of it, but oil that has soaked in over years can leave a shadow. We treat it, we don’t promise it vanishes.
• Cracked or loose paving: washing a cracked driveway makes the cracks easier to see, not easier to live with. Cracked units, sunken areas and loose edges are handyman repair work, quoted as their own job.
• Faded sealed surfaces: if the old sealer has gone chalky, a wash cleans it but doesn’t restore the gloss. That needs the seal tier, not the hose.
• Roofs: we don’t wash roofs. Working at roof height needs fall protection and a roof-trained crew, which is a different trade. We’d rather say so here than quote it badly on the day.

If a wash is the wrong tool for your surface, we say so when we quote, not after you’ve paid for it.

Where the water comes from

Tell us whether an outside tap is available and whether the estate restricts water use or runoff. Any alternative water supply and its cost must be agreed before booking.

How the job runs

You call or WhatsApp a photo of the paving. We quote off the photo where it’s clear, or come and measure first; either way you have one confirmed price before any water hits the surface.

On the day, we run a test patch on a hidden corner first, so you see what the pressure does to your material before the whole driveway gets it. Then the wash itself, off your tap or ours, at the pressure the material takes. Before we leave, the paving is rinsed down, the joints are re-sanded where they washed out, and the silt and debris are swept off and taken away, not left in a line at the curb. You get photos of the finished surface, and if you’re home we walk the job with you before we pack up.

Bundle it into one crew-day

A combined driveway and patio quote can account for shared setup. Ask about adding gutter cleaning rides the same crew-day: gutters first, then the wash-down, so the muck from the gutters gets cleaned off the paving afterwards instead of being left on it.
