The quick checks before you call
- Fresh battery first. A coin battery from any hardware shop revives a surprising share of “dead” remotes. A remote that dies with a new battery usually has a cracked solder joint where the battery clip meets the board (landing on the driveway does it), and that is the one fault a replacement remote fixes better than a repair.
- Second remote still works? Then the motor is fine: one remote has died. Cheapest outcome on this page.
- Wall button opens the gate? Motor and receiver wiring are fine; it is the remote or the receiver.
- Car's built-in remote stopped after a battery change? That is a re-pair, not a repair, and it usually takes minutes on site.
Intercoms and keypads ride the same visit: if the gate-side intercom stopped speaking to the house, or the keypad code stopped working, tell us when you call and we bring the parts that usually fix it.
Which remote fits your gate
The motors we meet behind northern Johannesburg gates are mostly Centurion and ET (the same spread our gate motor repairs see), with Hansa and Gemini in older installs. Each system takes its own remotes, and there are clones on the shelf that look identical to the originals: which is why the WhatsApp photo of the motor label decides what we bring, not the remote's shape.
Remote compatibility depends on frequency, coding and the receiver model. A similar-looking remote or a product labelled universal may not work with your system. Confirm the model before buying or programming a replacement.
Why remote range can fall
Reduced remote range can result from a weak transmitter battery, damage, interference, aerial problems or a receiver fault. Comparing a spare remote can help narrow the investigation, but it does not replace checking the system.
A replacement should be checked for compatibility and tested from the normal approach position. Ask for receiver and aerial checks if several remotes show the same reduced range.
How the visit works
- You call or WhatsApp a photo. The motor label and the dead remote, if you still have it, price most of these jobs before we leave the yard.
- We confirm an appointment. Remote and access call-outs are treated as gate work: a household locked out of its own gate is a security hole, not a scheduling problem.
- We diagnose on the spot. Remote, receiver or motor: you see which it is before anything is charged.
- We program and test before we leave. Every remote paired and tested from where you park, not from the gatepost.
Before we pack up, compatible remotes are tested and lost transmitters are removed from memory where the system allows. Ask for any additional spare and confirm whether diagnosis, receiver work and call-out credit are included in the agreed price.
Questions we get asked
Can I program a new remote myself instead of paying for a call-out?
Some systems support owner programming, but the procedure depends on the exact model and receiver. Follow the manufacturer manual, keep the gate area clear and avoid opening live covers. A failed pairing can also mean an incompatible remote or a programming issue.
My remote is lost. Can whoever finds it open my gate?
Yes, until the code is deleted from the system. Where the receiver allows it, we wipe the lost remote out of memory on the same visit, then program your new ones. A lost remote is a key lying in a parking lot; we treat it like one.
Can I use my phone as a gate remote?
Yes, through a GSM or Wi-Fi module fitted to the receiver: the phone then opens the gate by call, app or both. It's an add-on quoted as its own job once we've seen your system, so we don't price it blind here.
Do you post remotes, or do you come out?
We come out. We are not a remote shop: the online retailers ship you a unit and the programming is your problem. We arrive with the right remote for your motor, program it at the gate and test it from where you park.
How many remotes can one gate take?
Typically four to eight depending on the system. Households adding a driver and a domestic worker's access usually stay well inside that.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. The 6-month guarantee covers our workmanship, including the programming; remotes themselves carry the supplier's warranty, which we pass on to you.

Before you book
Reduced range can involve the transmitter battery, interference, aerial or receiver. Compare a spare remote if available and send the model details; range alone does not identify the faulty part.
