How to choose a gate motor

Check the gate before choosing the motor

A motor cannot correct worn wheels, a damaged track or an unstable gate. Ask the installer to assess the gate structure, guides, end stops, travel and resistance before sizing the automation. A gate that is hard to move needs its mechanical fault addressed first.

Give the installer the gate type, dimensions, approximate mass and the number of complete opening-and-closing cycles. For a complex, record the peak-hour queue as well as daily usage.

Compare four specifications

1. Gate mass and push force: confirm the model can handle the actual gate, including its condition and site constraints.
2. Operating duty: check both daily cycles and the permitted concentration of cycles in busy periods.
3. Backup: size the battery and charger for outages, movements and accessories.
4. Safety and access: include compatible safety devices, release arrangements and remote management.

For example, the older D5-Evo brochure specifies a maximum 500 kg gate and up to 150 daily cycles under its stated conditions. These are model-specific limits, not a recommendation for every gate below that mass. Current models and other brands require their own specification check.

Compare installed prices on the same basis

A motor-only retail price cannot be compared directly with a fitted system. Use the gate motor price guide for the relevant replacement scope, then obtain a separate quote for a new installation or substantial mechanical, electrical or access-control work.

• Exact motor, battery and charger model.
• Foundation, rack and mounting work.
• Safety beams and other required protective devices.
• Electrical supply work, remotes and receiver compatibility.
• Commissioning, handover, removal of old equipment and VAT.

A like-for-like replacement may reuse sound infrastructure, while a new installation cannot. Request each exclusion in writing and avoid adding generic component prices to a package that already includes them.

For complexes: standardise where it makes sense

Using a consistent equipment range can simplify spares and training, but a shared main entrance may need a different duty rating from a private unit gate. Ask for an asset-by-asset recommendation and a remote access plan, including removal of lost or former residents’ remotes.
