Municipal drop-off: check the specific site

Pikitup’s drop-off guidance includes garden waste and other material streams. Some sites accept recyclables, bulky waste or limited rubble; not every facility accepts every type. Garden sites are therefore not universally “green waste only”.

Use Pikitup’s facility locator and confirm current operating arrangements before travelling. Check eligibility, vehicle and load limits and any applicable fees directly. Keep green material separate from rubble, plastic and hazardous items. Do not assume it can go into the ordinary household bin: follow the collection and separation guidance for your area.

Collection and skips: compare volume, not vehicle names

Use the garden waste removal price guide for collection estimates. Obtain a separate skip quote for the same waste volume and material; neither option should be confused with a municipal tariff.

Ask for the approximate cubic capacity and whether loading, travel, disposal and VAT are included. Branches and loose clippings occupy space differently; “one bakkie” is not a precise quantity.

For example, three collections at R700 would total R2,100. Compare that complete amount with a skip quote for the same waste volume, including delivery, collection, hire days and any placement requirements. Request confirmation of the receiving facility and a disposal record where available.

Composting and complex storage

Composting can reduce the material leaving a garden, but it needs space and management. Separate unsuitable or treated material and ask for guidance where invasive plants or diseased cuttings are involved. Large woody branches may need a different route.

For a complex, mark a collection area, define what may be left there and set a removal schedule. Keep access routes clear and agree who handles contamination or excess loads. Do not use burning as a substitute for an approved disposal route.
