Choose a palette around the fixed materials

Start with the roof, brick, stone, paving and window frames that will remain. Choose the main wall colour next, then trim and a limited accent. Warm neutrals, muted greens and deeper accents are options to test, not a claim that one palette suits every house.

Test on the actual building

1. Use samples of the intended exterior product where available.
2. View a sufficiently large sample next to the fixed finishes.
3. Check the appearance in sun, shade and at different times of day.
4. Allow it to dry as directed before deciding.
5. Record the manufacturer, product, colour code and finish.

Online visualisers and printed cards help narrow the choice, but screens and photographs do not reproduce every finish accurately. Ask about touch-up availability and retain the final specification.

Prepare the wall before applying colour

Inspect for damp, cracks, chalking, loose paint and contamination. The quotation should explain the proposed preparation and primer as well as the topcoat. A new finish over an unresolved moisture problem can fail regardless of colour.

Use a coating suitable for the substrate and exposure. Deep shades, pale shades and textured finishes show dirt and wear differently, but colour alone cannot justify a guaranteed repaint interval. Follow the named product’s application and maintenance instructions.
