Send a job list that can be priced
Group the work by room and describe the result you need: a cupboard door aligned, a shelf fixed to a named wall, or a damaged fitting replaced. Add quantities, dimensions, photos and access restrictions.
State whether you already have the materials and whether the property is occupied. In a complex, include working hours and contractor access requirements. A site visit may still be needed where the substrate, fault or concealed services cannot be established from photos.
Check suitability before booking
- Confirm the business or individual responsible for the work and invoice.
- Ask for relevant examples and references you can verify.
- Establish who will attend and whether specialist work is subcontracted.
- Ask about insurance appropriate to the work and how accidental damage is handled.
- Confirm that tasks requiring specialist competence or registration will be assigned appropriately.
A broad handyman service description does not establish qualification for regulated electrical, gas or other specialist work. Ask what the provider can undertake and what needs a separate trade.
Fixed quote, hourly or day rate?
| Basis | Useful when | Agree in advance |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed quote | The job and materials are sufficiently defined | Scope, exclusions and approval of changes |
| Hourly | The task list or fault needs some flexibility | Minimum time, rate, estimate and spending limit |
| Day rate | A substantial list can fill the booked time | Working hours, crew size and unfinished items |
Use the handyman price guide for hourly, day and call-out estimates. Confirm travel, materials, VAT and whether a call-out includes working time. Any call-out credit must be stated in the quote. A day rate is not automatically eight times an hourly rate.
For example, three hours at R500 is R1,500 before separately agreed costs. Compare that with the total day quote and expected completed tasks, rather than the headline rate alone.
Agree payment and acceptance
Keep the written scope, accepted quote and any approved changes together. Where a deposit is requested, ask what it covers and obtain a receipt. Agree payment stages proportionate to the work and materials.
Before completion, walk through the list, test the items where appropriate and record anything outstanding. Ask for the invoice, care instructions and written workmanship or product warranty terms. Keep records if a dispute arises; the Consumer Protection Act provides the relevant consumer framework where applicable.
Warning signs include an unexplained scope change, pressure to pay without documentation or refusal to identify who is responsible. A sole trader or larger crew can both be suitable; judge the agreed work and accountability.
